13.30 – 15.00: How do technologies pass the first valley of death? – a workshop

On the way from an idea to serial production and conquering the market, there is a risk of the death of the technology. There are 9 technology readiness levels (TRL). Level 1 is an idea; Level 9 is mass production scaling. At the workshop, we will consider the issue of determination of (TRL) by various national and international organizations. One of the causes of the death of technology in the transition from the laboratory to production is the gap between R&D and R&I. We will offer possible ways to solve this problem. On the other hand, the first valley of death is also related to not enough funding. Possible funding sources will be considered, both for scientific employee’s teams projects and for startups. There will be many useful links. For work in groups, a real case of bringing an innovative product to the market will be proposed.

11.00 – 11.30: Invited talk – Dynamic Energy and Cost-Efficient Multi-UAV Routing Problem Using Enhanced Genetic Algorithm by Alparslan Guzey (Chaired by Tamer Abu-Alam)

In this research, we introduce an innovative approach to solve the capacitated multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multi-visit routing challenge. The core of our study centers on enhancing energy and cost efficiency through the application of an advanced genetic algorithm. We explore the effects of adjusting drone speeds according to their payloads, examining its influence on both energy use and operational costs. Our detailed model accounts for the interplay among payload weight, drone speed, and energy consumption, laying the groundwork for future drone delivery networks. Our findings reveal that this method is well-equipped to tackle the complexities of real-world delivery tasks, proving its versatility in handling different payload weights and navigating intricate routes. This research not only demonstrates the flexibility and effectiveness of our algorithm in optimizing drone delivery services but also addresses a previously unexplored aspect of the optimization process by considering the variability of speed and payload sizes. Our work signifies a step forward in improving UAV-based logistical operations by minimizing energy needs and reducing expenses.

Alparslan Güzey received his B.S. degree in Econometrics and MSc degree in Applied Operational Research from Gazi University in 2016 and 2020, respectively. His research field is UAV routing problems. His dissertation focuses on machine learning applications in path planning algorithms for autonomous vehicles and intelligent traffic management systems.

Alparslan Guzey has worked in Istanbul Kültür University as a researcher and D.Director of Technology Transfer Office since 2020. He has  publications on the subjects of UAV optimal energy efficiency, UAV/UGV hybrid routing problems and emergency logistic delivery.
